I tried to print out a web form at amazon, but it said i had no printer installed. I did have, but had not used it since a recent OS reinstall. I had a lot of error messages to do with spooling and after much research and changing of settings (printer spooling, RPC, DependOnService) the drivers seemed to install OK. In fact i soon realised i only had access to the XPS document writer.

I understand this is 'XP's default printer' I removed both this and the lexmark from 'printers and faxes' (and File/Server Properties) and tried again to reinstall the lexmark drivers. The installer seemed to work through OK, copying files to windows system (i tried using both the original CD and the latest driver from the web) but it then just closes leaving me with no printer drivers installed. In desperation, i tried a system restore, but despite trying my last two restore points it would not roll back, and it would not tell me why. The printer is a Z640 that has installed and worked fine a number of times before. My brain is a bit fagged after about 4 hours trying to sort this, so apologies if i've left out any important info which i will gladly supply if required. With the printer plugged in, go to Start/Printers and Faxes and if the printer is listed there, right click and Delete it. Now go to Start/Run and type appwiz.cpl and press Enter. In the Add/Remove programs uninstall any Lexmark software for your printer.

No printers at all in 'printers and services' and no yellow or unknown devices in device manager before or after the 'installation'. (Device manager has no 'USB' heading, but the entries under 'Human Interface devices' and 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' appear fine.

Is that what you meant?) Add/Remove Programmes contained no printer entry, but the were two folders from previous attempts on the HD: C Lexmark and C Program Files Lexmark 600 Series. I deleted these before the install attempt, although the installer offers to overwrite them anyway. Incidentally, if i reboot with the printer attached, windows recognises it, right down to the model number, but no way will it complete the installation. Hope you have some further suggestions when things get going that side of the pond.

Sorry about the repeated posts but i can't edit my last. Anyway, i seem to have half solved the problem, which i believe was caused by my not having language monitor installed. Instead of running cjb640EN.exe (the latest drivers) I extracted the files and found lxdaw2k.inf in Lexmark Driver Lexmark lxk640 drivers WINXP2K. I opened it in notepad and placed a semicolon at the beginning of the line that read 'LanguageMonitor=%LEXMONITOR%' I then ran setup.exe in Lexmark Driver Lexmark lxk640 drivers WINXP2K ENGLISH. The installer said it made a change to my system (twice) and then ran through perfectly. The problem now is i cannot print a test page despite following the instructions above as 'the printer cannot communicate with the computer'.
